NIST SSDF Implementation Guide: Practical SP 800-218 Walkthrough

The NIST Secure Software Development Framework (SSDF), published as SP 800-218, has quietly become one of the most consequential security documents an enterprise software vendor or internal security team can read. What the NIST SSDF Actually Is

NIST SP 800-218, the Secure Software Development Framework, was published in February 2022 to replace and consolidate the older fragmented body of NIST secure development guidance. Each SSDF practice has the same structure. Each practice has tasks under it, written as concrete activities, for example "Define policies that specify risk-based software architecture and design requirements". Each task has example implementations, which are non-normative ways the task could be carried out. Practice Group PS: Protect the Software

PS now expects you to demonstrate that the source you compiled, the binary you released, and the artefact the customer received are all the same thing.

PS practices are also where SBOM becomes a load-bearing requirement, not a documentation exercise. PS.3 asks producers to archive each release with evidence sufficient to identify the components and dependencies that went into it. That is exactly what an SBOM is for. Practical PS Implementation

  • PS.1 (protect code): enforce branch protection, required reviews, signed commits where feasible, and provenance for any code that lands in main. Record the policy in the SSDF programme document.

Practice Group PW: Produce Well-Secured Software

PW is the largest practice group and the one engineering teams will spend most of their time on. PW.1 covers design requirements. PW.2 covers reviews of design. Practice Group RV: Respond to Vulnerabilities

RV is the smallest practice group and arguably the most underestimated. RV.1 covers identifying and confirming vulnerabilities on an ongoing basis.
